Hi everyone
We are currently in Utila, Honduras, it´s been a crazy few days.
F irst off, Air CAnada in it´s usual exceptional customer service, our flight was 5 hours late leaving CAlgary , they apparently didn´t know they had a flight so they were short a flight attendant. luckily, a woman travelling on our flight was a flight attendant, so she offered to fly and then, oh no uniform, another hour delay. Whoops, US customs is closed, the uniform was snuck in by a cleaning person. We arrived at 330 AM in Houston, got our bags and the check in for Continental was already open. The airport was so busy, you´d think it was 330pm. Checked in and had sleep on lower level D where the interterminal train runs. Sort of like being homeless, there were people sleeping everywhere.
Caught our flight to Tegucialpa. The landing was a bit iffy, a complete circle over a mountain, apparently `planes crash into the side of the mountain, which is not comforting. Casey was sleeping through it all, despite my gripping his arm like my lifeline!
Airport was chaotic, hundreds and hundreds of people waiting for their family to arrive. We breezed in, got a cab and headed to the bus station. On the way to our planned bus station we saw another, hopped out at 155pm, had a pee and got on the bus for a planned 6 hour ride. Turned into 9 hours and arrived in LaCeiba at close to 11pm.
Cabbed to a few hotels, full. SHIT. It´s now midnight and we´re in dodginess to say the least. The whole place, even in the daylight, is pretty iffy. Anyways, we get a room, $35 a night, which is pretty expensive comparitively speaking and don´t check the bathroom before we pay. We open the door, MOLD city. We kept the door closed when we were sleeping. Nice. Anyways, checked out the next morning (20th) and goto the ferry to get to Utila.
Uneventful , a bit choppy but not bad. We get off the ferry an dit´s nothing like Thailand or Greece, there is noone there to meet the boat. Weird, just dive shop people, and only a handful. .after being here 1 day we realize the island is walkable in about 30 minutes from end to end, that´s why there is not a big deal made when the boat arrives. We end up at Utila dive center, get a dorm room for $3 a night and head over to the dive shop. Frank the dive master offers to give me a free trial run. Ok people, a free dive trial run at 330. WE got for lunch and then head back. at the end of 20 minutes i had gone down about 6 feet for about 2 minutes. I can´t hack it, Casey signs up for his Advanced Diving course, and I plan on hitting th ebeach, a spanish class, blogging, reading and general nothingness.
Walked around ¨main street¨of town, which is about 5 minutes long and ended up at a dock bar , watching the sunset and drinking Salva Vida, one of their many beers. 6 beers later and 1 pizza down, we head back to our room to change. I´ts only 730 pm, it feels like midnight because it gets dark so early. We hit the Jade Seahorse pub which is in a treehouse, and watch the action at the Pimps and Ho´s party.
WE are not dressed appropriately, well, overdressed let´s say. Another Salva Vida and off to somewhere else. We check out Skid Row where we have another beer and meet Vern the catamaran guy who will take us from Utila to Roatan via catamaran. Ca sey left me no other option, we are not going back to LaCeiba and then getting another ferry. We hope to goto Pigeon Cay, which is about 200mlong and 200m wide and stay a night or two.
It´s now the 21st. 1245pm, Casey is probably on his way to his deep dive, 35M I think for all you divers following the blog.
oh, I forgot the part about how I lost my bank card. SHIT! 2 days in and I can´t even keep track of a bank card. Cancelled it and moved on.
Will blog again before we leave Utila, I´m off to the beach, and waiting for my next sunset.
